Last Week in Hating Dice – Adepticon 2025 Recap
So... I Broke My Streak
Hey folks,
Adepticon 2025 is in the bag—and what a whirlwind the last 10 days have been.
It’s been so busy, in fact, that I broke my streak of getting these updates out on time. While I’m a bit gutted about that, I did publish two other articles written on the flight over, so I’m cutting myself some slack. (Don’t worry, guilt still unlocked the achievement.)
Slight Scheduling Shift (So I Don’t Implode)
Quick admin note:
Up to now, I’ve tried to have each article cover the current week right up to Sunday—but that made posting on Sundays a chaotic nightmare. So, going forward, these recaps will now cover Friday evening to the following Friday morning. Hopefully that removes some pressure (and stops me from writing at 2am with a sinus infection).
Travel, Jet Lag & Terminal Edits
Monday was the usual last-minute “unpacking + sorting life” day. Then on Tuesday, I was off: a 9-hour flight to Atlanta, followed by a short hop to Milwaukee.
I knocked out two articles on the plane, trying different writing styles just to stretch the brain, but exhaustion was very real.
Wednesday – Setup Day & Reunion Vibes
Wednesday was full-on: setting up the hall, helping with other games, and reconnecting with the extended Adepticon crew. This is my third year helping Atomic Mass Games run their events, and the new venue (Baird Center in Milwaukee) was absolutely stunning.
And the Star Wars: Legion branding? Chef’s kiss. You could feel AMG shouting from the rooftops: Legion is here in 2025, and it's going to be BIG.
The AMG Roadmap – Shatterpoint & Hondo?!
Now, I wasn’t in the room for the AMG Roadmap (I was multitasking with headphones and setup duties), but even listening remotely, the energy was electric.
I immediately bought back into Shatterpoint—having sold my stuff before the move due to space constraints. But hey, I expected Adepticon swag, so I left room in the suitcase like a responsible gamer.
The Legion announcements were rapid-fire and overwhelming (in the best way). I’ll cover more in the Deploy the Garrison content, but safe to say:
Customizable characters are coming
Hondo is in. Profit is the only goal now.
And I’m 100% ready to write lore for a scoundrel-led crew of rebels.
Games Workshop Goodies
From the GW side, there was a flood of news:
40K: Space Wolves, Grey Knights, Thousand Sons, Death Guard, World Eaters incoming.
Minor personal sadness: My Nurgle Daemons getting absorbed into the new Death Guard/Nurgle book. But hey—still playable!
The real kicker for me was the Old World reveals:
Army of Grand Cathay looks amazing.
Beastmen finally getting love might make me expand beyond my RPG kitbash box of horrors from the last 15 years.
I also swung by the GW booth and picked up fridge magnets, event exclusives, and a few mystery items I’m hoping to show off soon...
X-Wing Side Events, Sickness & Rockstars
The bulk of my Adepticon time was spent organizing the X-Wing side events, and sadly, also getting sick. After nearly a month of travel, airports, and timezone-hopping, my body just gave up.
I still dragged myself out of bed daily, but the X-Wing judge crew were absolute legends and carried me across the finish line. Despite the coughs, we got through the last AMG-run X-Wing Worlds smoothly—and that meant the world (pun semi-intended).
Talking with so many people who still love this game—especially at the end of its official run—was powerful. Hopefully, we helped everyone squeeze one last bit of fun from their pew-pew careers.
And the Winner Is... Calen Wong
And what a finish it was!
Calen Wong, former 2024 Worlds judge, told us he was stepping down this year to make one last run.
Spoiler: He only went and won the whole damn thing.
I’ve known Calen for years (and yes, he has wrecked me in Scum mirror matches more than once), so seeing him lift the trophy was an emotional high point. And hey—he’s Canadian! Which means technically, the trophy came home with me. That’s how that works, right?
Back to Reality (and Mild Delirium)
As I write this, it’s 2am on Thursday morning. I’ve got post-con plague and zero regrets.
This week’s This Week in Hating Dice will probably also be late... but I’m back on track now, right?
Thanks to everyone who stopped to say hi, and apologies to everyone I didn’t get to spend enough time with.
Here’s hoping for next year. Until then: sleep, soup, and suitcase unpacking.
