Wookiee Beatdowns, Spray Can Science, and the War on Cardboard

Week 21 - Two Months in and Hitting a Routine?

We’ve officially hit two months back in the UK, and some kind of routine is starting to form. This week was a good one for hobby progress: a Star Wars: Legion game, visible movement on my Ork Hunta Rig, and even taking another swing at the last stack of cardboard boxes clogging up the dining room.

Star Wars: Legion - Wookiee Defenders vs. Anakin and Ahsoka

I made another trip to Element Games in Stockport for a rematch with my Wookiee Defenders list. (If you missed the first outing, you can read about it here.)

This time I played Sam, who brought a Republic list with Anakin, Ahsoka, ARC Troopers, Republic Commandos, and an AT-RT. I’d never played against Republic Ahsoka or the Commandos before, so I was excited to see how it played out.

Mission: Close the Pocket
Deployment: Sweep and Clear
Advantage: We both had Cunning Deployment

Sam dropped his Priority Token on the rightmost objective and backed it up with Anakin and Commandos. I immediately decided we were playing "soft Long March", because there was no way I was walking into that meat grinder.

Turn 1

I played Luminous Beings Are We for order control, kept my Fluttercraft until last, and managed a couple of potshots:

  • Chipped a wound off his AT-RT

  • Nearly dropped a Fluttercraft after Sam focused fire with the Commandos

The calm before the WAAHHHHRRRGGHHHH…

Turn 2

There is No Try hit the table, giving Yoda and Chewbacca orders and an almost clean bag. I couldn’t quite get a unit of Wookiees onto the center objective, but two Fluttercraft made it there.

My Ranged Wookiees... well, they tried. Even with Aims, white dice were white dice. But my melee Wookiees got within Range 2, opened up with pistols, and dropped two ARC troopers. Chewie and Yoda followed up with Relentless shots, and by the end of the round, I’d taken out two ARC squads and only lost a single Fluttercraft.

Then Sam’s remaining ARC Troopers charged my wounded Wookiees on the left with 10 black dice—8 hits. But somehow my Wookiees survived with 4 saves on white dice. One model remained and was now locked in combat and contesting the objective. Massive swing.

These ARC troopers knew the odds—and lost anyway.

Turn 3

I was feeling good. Two Fluttercraft were still alive, Yoda and Chewbacca were healthy, and I had control of the board. I played Size Matters Not and lined up responses for whatever Sam threw at me.

  • I opened with a shot into Anakin, catching him out of Back up and Medic range.

  • More Bowcaster chip shots and a Ranged attack from my Combat Wookiees took out the center Clone unit.

  • A Tempted Anakin advanced to threaten the center; but was caught by a charge from a Wookiee Unit, taking 2 more wounds.

  • Sam tried to pull Ahsoka but missed the Commander token with Improvised Orders, and I got the second Wookiee unit into melee and deleted Anakin instead.

Yoda mopped up the last ARC squad.

By the start of Turn 4, I was technically down 6–7 on points, but Sam had lost all his ARC Troopers, Anakin, and a Clone squad. His Commandos were out of position, and my Bowcasters were flanking his wounded AT-RT. Sam called the game.

When diplomacy fails, send in the fur missiles.

Post Game Thoughts

We both agreed the early ARC flank was a mistake—overexposed, and an invitation for me to go full Wookiee on them. For both games I’ve played against Republic recently, I’ve found prioritizing ARC Troopers has paid off. They’re durable but not invincible—chip damage from Bowcasters and steady focus fire works.

Hobby Time – Hunta Rig, Spray Cans & Storage Trials

Back on the hobby front, I’ve got the Hunta Rig built in sub-assemblies. It’s undercoated and base-sprayed now:

  • Chassis: Silver

  • Guns: Bronze

Disassembled components of a Warhammer 40K Ork Hunta Rig laid out for assembly.

Some assembly required. Waaagh! sold separately.

I picked up a bunch of Colour Forge sprays from Element Games since I couldn’t bring rattle cans on the plane:

  • Silver & Bronze: Excellent coverage

  • Black Primer: Very solid

  • White Primer: Only about an 8/10, but I'm extremely picky with white

  • Matt Varnish: Not tested yet, will report back after I finish painting something

Five cans of Colour Forge primer spray paints displayed in front of board game shelves.

Technically hobby progress, even if I haven’t used them all yet…

Magnetic Storage Test – Saving My Sanity

I finally started tackling the cardboard box chaos in the dining room. I’m experimenting with ferrous sheets and magnets in a Really Useful Box (the literal brand).

So far:

  • It’s still early days, but everything looks to be holding securely

  • I need more box sizes to accommodate varied hights of miniatures, as my Great Unclean One does not quite fit into the 9 LTR that I picked up.

If this test goes well, I’ll do a full update next week with photos and a basic guide. It will be nice to slowly replace “box-digging” with “lift lid, grab army.”

I’m still experimenting with different inserts and magnets, but these seem to be mostly stable…

Closing Thoughts

Between painting, playing, and purging cardboard, it feels like I’m finally starting to rebuild the DiceHate rhythm over here in Wigan. It’s a grind, but there’s progress. And rolling dice with Wookiees helps.
