Gaming Through the Chaos – Necromunda, Mordheim & Moving Woes
Whelp… that’s probably the best way to describe this week.
It’s been a strange one, but this was the first week of Gill being done with work, so we were both home to start focusing on the move. That meant a rapid uptick in selling off furniture and gaming gear, but with only a week to go until we move into our Airbnb, it’s probably for the best.
Between sleeping on an air mattress and trying to record in an echo-filled basement, miniatures took a backseat this week. That said, I kept myself busy in other ways—like finally selling the DiceHate Workstation that’s been at the heart of my content creation for years.
I procrastinated hard on this one, but in the end, it had to go. I used some of the funds to pick up a Steam Deck to tide me over, though realistically, it’s probably just going to become my main gaming system after the move. Setting it up took some time, but more importantly, I figured out how to install Minecraft on it so I could wipe the PS4 and get that sold too.
Down to our last screen... but at least we can still dig straight down.
Steam Deck, Switch & Rebuilding My Gaming Setup
Selling the PS4 meant a trip to Video Game Trader where I walked in fully prepared to take whatever offer they had. Turns out, they were overstocked, so I could only get store credit. After some ChatGPT-fueled research, I used the credit to pick up a Nintendo Switch instead.
Now, as I type this, Evie is upstairs playing LEGO Star Wars on our last remaining TV, which honestly makes my day. Maybe this is how I finally get her to actually watch Star Wars with me… we can dream, right?
Other than feeling ancient trying to relearn Monster Hunter after years away, the Switch and Steam Deck have been fun distractions in an otherwise chaotic week.

Necromunda: The Penultimate Challenge & Power Curve Thoughts
Even with everything going on, I did manage to get one more Necromunda game in—my penultimate challenge before the campaign ends. I faced off against Ian’s Van Saar again and tried to give him a better experience than last time. (I know, not very Delaque of me, but I felt bad for how quickly I won before!)
I won’t go into full details, but late-game Van Saar are something else.
It got me thinking about power curves in a Necromunda campaign—something I might do a full article on later. My Delaque gang peaked in Weeks 3-4, when I had just the right mix of tricks to keep opponents on their toes. By contrast, in an older campaign, my Slave Ogryns peaked early, since they were nearly unstoppable before everyone had access to high-strength, high-damage weapons.
For those of you who play campaign-based games, when do you feel like your gang/army hit its stride? When did it start to fall off? Drop your thoughts in Discord—I’d love to hear how different gangs curve out!

Mordheim? What Year is This?!
In something of a pivot, I want to talk about Mordheim.
My first introduction to the Rust Punks (our local narrative gaming group) was when they were trying to find space for a Mordheim campaign at The Sentry Box. When they turned up with 23 players for their first campaign, I was impressed.
Now that their Necromunda campaign is ending, they’re launching a new Mordheim league, and while I won’t be around to play in it, I found some old Skaven minis in my pile of shame. I think they were originally for a Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay campaign I ran years ago, but now, I’m going to see if I can get them painted and maybe fit in a couple of learning games before I go.
If anyone has Skaven warband tips, let me know—because I have no idea what I’m doing.

Reality Check: Fitness Goals & the Adepticon Countdown
Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about something that’s occupied a large part of my brain this week—and something I need to hold myself accountable for.
With Gill home and able to help with Aayla, I finally took stock of my health and fitness. I’d felt heavy for a while, but I hadn’t really stopped to look at the numbers. The long and short of it is:
Since Gill went back to work in early 2023, I’ve gained about 10kg (22+ lbs) while being the stay-at-home parent during the day.
I started the week at 126 kg (277+ lbs) and decided I need to do something about it.
Short-Term Goal: Drop below 120 kg (264.5 lbs) by Adepticon—which gives me 24 days.
Now, this should be achievable… unless there was something stressful, like an international move, happening in the middle of it. But hey, we take the rough with the smooth, right? At some point, we’re going to roll those boxcars.
Rolling better dice on the scale this week. Just gotta avoid the critical fail of stress eating...
That’s it for this week in Hating Dice! Between gaming, selling off possessions, and trying to balance fitness goals, it’s been a rollercoaster.
Have you ever tried to keep gaming through a move? What’s your secret to balancing real life and rolling dice?
Any Mordheim veterans with Skaven tips? I’d love to hear them!
